Why Different Fees for Different Psychologists?
Typically, the more qualified and experienced the psychologist, the higher their rate.
- General Psychologists: They have completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology, usually with honours or a master’s in general psychology. They have finished their internship and are fully registered. You can receive a Medicare rebate for therapy sessions with a general psychologist.
- Clinical Psychologists: After completing studies and an internship in psychology, clinical psychologists undertake an additional master’s degree in clinical psychology and complete an extra internship in clinical psychology. This advanced training provides them with more knowledge and experience in handling mental health issues, which is why the Medicare rebate is higher for therapy sessions with clinical psychologists.
- Provisional Psychologists: These individuals have completed their studies and are undergoing an internship. They are registered with AHPRA under the condition of supervision by an experienced psychologist. Sometimes, provisional psychologists are experienced professionals from overseas who must redo their internship to become registered in Australia.
For assessments, seeing a provisional psychologist can be more cost-effective, as Medicare rebates are not available for assessments. The fee is lower, and the entire process is supervised by an experienced psychologist.
More Details on ADHD Treatment Options
Medication works well for a lot of people with ADHD, but other than medication there are more types of treatment.
ADHD Treatments
- Psychological Therapies: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is effective in helping individuals with ADHD develop coping strategies and change negative thought patterns. It focuses on problem-solving and skill-building to manage symptoms better.
- ADHD Coaching: Coaches work with individuals to develop personalized strategies for managing time, staying organized, and achieving goals. This can be particularly beneficial for both students and professionals.
- Dietary Adjustments: Implementing dietary changes, such as reducing sugar intake and ensuring a balanced diet, can help manage ADHD symptoms.
- Support Groups: Joining support groups provides emotional support and practical advice from others who share similar experiences, creating a sense of community.
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, targeting areas involved in attention and behavior regulation. Studies suggest it can help improve attention and reduce impulsivity, typically involving daily sessions over several weeks.
Get Support at Work or School
Many companies and schools offer additional support for individuals with an ADHD diagnosis. Examples include:
- Flexible Work Hours: Allowing flexible work hours to align with optimal focus periods can enhance productivity.
- Quiet Work Areas: Providing access to quiet spaces or noise-canceling headphones helps minimize distractions and improve concentration.
- Written Instructions: Offering detailed written instructions and checklists clarifies tasks and expectations, reducing misunderstandings.
- Regular Breaks: Encouraging regular breaks helps manage attention span and reduce fatigue, leading to better overall performance.
